This children's book classic tells the story of a poor but happy family of four children who, in spite of being fatherless, make the lives of others better. Newly widowed, Nancy Carey keeps her healthy spirit and folksy grit and takes her four children to live in the tiny Maine town of Beulah. There, they learn to love country life, country neighbors, country schools, and especially their new home, the Yellow House. They have little misadventures and learn to be better people. Their home life becomes complicated when Julia, a snobbish cousin, comes to live with them. The Carey children suffer many disappointments, but in the end, Julia is transformed when she realizes happiness has little to do with wealth. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856 – 1923) was an American educator and author of children's stories, most notably the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor.

This is a good old story. You get a peek into the past, how they lived and some of there attitudes. Its very uplifting, through hardships they keep a good attitude and end up all right in the end. This is a wonderful book, that I will be reading to my family for family read aloud time. It makes you yearn for a simpler life. :) (with modern day pluming .... I am not ready to give that up yet)I do suggest when you come to new words or phrases, look them up on line. Some phrases we say today have changed meanings in the last century. (at one point it says a little girl french kisses a friend of the family's - I am pretty sure that means a peck on one cheek and then a peck on the other cheek) And they talk about poems and books we might not have heard of. Stop and learn about them. Its great fun getting lost in the past.

Loved the beauty of the book, the story, the descriptive writing and included poem snippets. It was a pleasant read from beginning to end. The characters all came to life for me. It was like I was part of the story
I really enjoyed reading this book. I had recently seen the movie "Summer Magic" with Haley Mills but was puzzled about the strange ending. I felt something was missing. When I found out it was based on this book I read it and the book cleared up my confusion. I enjoy books written in this time frame and loved these characters. I really didn't think I would like the book that much but I did. So glad I read it.
This printing is not readable. Several of the pictures are sideways. The page numbers are in the middle of the text in the middle of the page. The paragraphs are interrupted by subtitles randomly placed throughout. Words are split and you can't find the other half anywhere to continue the sentence. It is a jumble and a huge mistake. I'm not sure what happened at the printer's, but it seems like all the parts were thrown up in the air and where ever they landed is how it was printed. I would like a refund or exchange.
This is a story about down-to-earth characters and the triumph of the "loving family circle" on all those who are touched by it. The clothes and customs are different from today's but the basic love and lessons learned are timeless. Truly enjoyable.
This was totally charming...I was a big fan of the Disney Summer Magic movie with Haley Mills as a young girl...this is the book on which the movie was based...I was actually surprised to find that the book was far closer to the original book than I expected given Disney's tendency to embroider on source material...other than removing a redundant daughter from the central family and collapsing two families of neighbors into one set of characters the book held all of the charm and more of the movie and was a sheer delight...
The book behind Disney's "Summer Magic", is a late 19th Century moral tale by the same author that wrote Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. In it, innocence and simplistic virtue win out over all obstacles to produce felicity and general happiness for the fatherless family and their circle of acquaintances.
Disney borrowed several of the characters and reworked them into a slightly different and somewhat simplified storyline, but one which is of similar character. If you enjoyed the movie, you'll probably enjoy the book, as long as you don't expect it to be the exact same story.
I love this story, but my issues are with the published version I purchased. The contents of letters, poetry quotes, songs etc have been left out of this print copy. Thankfully I was already familiar with the book, and noticed they were gone, and could pull them up on my , but someone who did not know would find portions of the book confusing. The print is small, and the spacing tight, but those would not be a big deal if the portions were not missing.
